Because of the construction that will begin north of Kinnick Stadium and west of the UI Recreation Building in late summer/early fall, game day parking has been changed from previous years. To learn about those changes, click HERE.
Opening Time for Lots
Pre-paid Parking
Reason: Fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes attending the home games of the 2011 University of Iowa football team at Kinnick Stadium will have streamlined access to UI-managed parking lots as a result of the implementation of a pre-paid parking program.
Handicap Parking
Hawkeye Express
Parking is free and the round-trip train service costs just $10 per person with children 12 and under riding for free. Service to Kinnick Stadium - a 10-minute ride - begins 3 hours prior to kickoff. Service post-game begins at the start of the fourth quarter and continues until 90 minutes after the game.
Tickets for the Hawkeye Express may be purchased in advance at the UI Athletic Ticket Office located at the west entrance of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets will also be available for purchase on game-day upon arrival at the Hawkeye Express depot. Fans can also trade one pre-paid parking pass for two Hawkeye Express tickets.
The Hawkeye Express is not wheelchair accessible. On game days, patrons with disabilities restricting their mobility are invited to use the parking spaces reserved in Hospital Ramp #2 and limited space in the lot directly north of Kinnick Stadium.
For more information about the Hawkeye Express call the UI Sports Marketing Office at (319) 335-9431 or the UI Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800 IA-HAWKS.
Free Shuttles
Closed Streets
Reason: Pedestrian traffic is extremely high.
Parking in Designated Areas
Reason: In order to efficiently use every parking lot, specific locations are assigned for automobiles and motor homes. Also, for the safety of tailgaters, travel lanes must remain clear for vehicles to pass, especially emergency vehicles.
Law Enforcement and Traffic Directions
Reason: Law enforcement, traffic and parking staff along traffic routes and at parking lots are there to assist and direct motorists to the best routes for the closest available parking.
Saving Spaces
Reason: Parking on the University of Iowa campus is on a first-come, first served basis except in lots with reserved spaces.
Spaces for Vehicles Only
Reason: There are a limited number of parking spaces on the University of Iowa campus for the 70,000 fans that attend games. It is important to make every space available for use for parking.
Travel Lanes
Reason: In order to efficiently use every parking lot, vehicles must be able to access parking spots via travel lanes. Also, for the safety of tailgaters, travel lanes must remain clear for vehicles to pass, especially emergency vehicles.
Motor Home (RV) and Bus Parking
Charter Bus parking is located along Hawkins Drive next to the Dental College Parking lot. Please stop at the designated area east of Kinnick Stadium and next to Hospital Ramp #2 to pay the $80 fee and proceed north on Hawkins Drive to the bus parking area. No tailgating space is available next to bus parking.
Buses with storage decks on top are not permitted.
Utility Trailers and Pull-Behind Motor Homes/5th Wheels
Reason: Spaces in reserved lots are reserved exclusively for cars or motor homes. Even if a utility trailer or pull-behind motor home/5th wheel fits into a motor home space, it can cause tailgate parties to overflow into travel lanes causing a hazard for other vehicles and the passage of emergency vehicles.
Alcohol Policy
Fans tailgating Friday nights on public property are reminded that the possession of an open container of beer, wine or consumption of hard liquor is prohibited by law. Law enforcement officers will ask fans to empty the container or issue a citation.
On Saturday football game days only, beer and wine are allowed in UI parking areas. Patrons and ticket holders are advised that state law prohibits hard liquor consumption of possession of an opened bottle of hard liquor on public property, which includes university parking lots and ramps. Law enforcement will empty any opened, visible bottle of hard liquor and may issue a citation.
The State of Iowa's minimum legal drinking age is 21. Law enforcement will stop anyone who appears to be underage transporting beer and other alcoholic beverages. If underage, a PAULA citation will be issued and all alcoholic beverages will be emptied.
Beer trucks, kegs, open bars and people in possession of exorbitant amounts of alcohol will not be permitted in any UI parking area including parking ramps. Violators will be asked to leave University property immediately.
Anyone in possession of an open container (including beer, wine and hard liquor) while walking/driving to University property on the public sidewalks and roads will be issued a citation and the beverage will be confiscated.
Any persons who appear intoxicated will be refused entry into the stadium and are subject to arrest. Any persons who appear intoxicated or those possessing or drinking alcohol in unapproved areas of the stadium will be ejected without refund and are subject to arrest. Any alcohol discovered in unapproved areas in the stadium will be confiscated. The University reserves the right to search patrons for alcoholic beverages.
For games starting at 11:00 a.m., consumption of alcoholic beverages must cease two hours after game. All tailgating activities in University owned parking lots and ramps must end three hours after an 11:00 a.m. game. Consumption of alcoholic beverages must cease one hour after the game and all tailgating activities in University owned parking lots and ramps must end two hours after games that start in the afternoon. Post-game tailgating will not be permitted at all for games that start in the evening (6:00 p.m. or later). During the final hour of the post-game tailgating, fans will be asked to pack up tents, tables, chairs, grills, etc. and begin to make their exit from University parking lots and ramps. Post-game alcohol and tailgate compliance will be enforced by UI officials. The exception to this policy is that RV owners will be allowed to spend the night, however, tailgating activities will not be permitted past the designated time.
Reason: In an effort to encourage an enjoyable experience for all fans attending games at Kinnick Stadium, persons who are intoxicated or who are in possession of alcohol will be removed from the stadium.
Balloons, Blimps or Other Inflatables
Reason: Tethered inflatables of any kind pose a danger in addition to creating a safety risk for others in the parking lots and to air ambulances arriving and departing from UI Hospitals and Clinics.
Bands
Reason: This policy is intended to protect the enjoyment of other fans. Musical tastes and tolerable noise levels vary greatly from tailgate party to tailgate party.
Caterers
Reason: Parking lot attendants are instructed to only allow vehicles with parking permits into reserved lots. They cannot be expected to monitor vehicles that intend to drop off items and leave the lots.
Security and Safety
Reason: The University of Iowa cannot ensure the security of tailgate areas.
Tents
Reason: There are a limited number of parking spaces on the University of Iowa campus for the 70,000 fans that attend games. It is important to make every space available for parking. They can also cause tailgate parties to overflow into travel lanes causing a hazard for other vehicles and the passage of emergency vehicles.
