Coach Kirk Ferentz and the 2006 University of Iowa football team have accepted an invitation to play in the 2006 Alamo Bowl to be played in San Antonio on Saturday, Dec. 30.

The invitation marks the sixth straight season that the Hawkeyes will have participated in a post-season bowl game. It also marks the return to the city and stadium that served as the starting point for the most successful four years in the history of football at the UI.

On Dec. 29, 2001, Iowa defeated Texas Tech 19-16 in the 2001 Alamo Bowl when placekicker Nate Kaeding drilled a 47-yard field goal with 44 seconds left to play. That victory was the final chapter in a 7-5 season and provided the impetus that propelled Iowa to 38 wins and invitations to the 2003 FedEx Orange Bowl, the 2004 Outback Bowl, the 2005 Capital One Bowl, and the 2006 Outback Bowl over the four seasons that followed the Hawkeyes' third appearance in San Antonio.

"It is tough to go to six straight bowl games in a conference as strong as the Big Ten. Only three other teams have done it, and I am proud of that. It is a significant accomplishment that speaks well of our program. "

Friends of the University of Iowa and fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes interested in following the Hawkeyes to San Antonio are strongly encouraged to purchase their game tickets through the UI Athletic Ticket Office. By doing so, they are guaranteed seats within the University of Iowa sections of the Alamodome. A purchase from the UI Athletic Ticket Office also helps the UI fulfill its contractual obligations to the 2006 Alamo Bowl.

Three different types of tickets are available - $85, $65 and $50 - and all can be purchased online by clicking HERE or by calling 1-800 IA-HAWKS. Tickets can also be purchased at the UI Athletic Ticket Office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

"There is no question about it. Our fans are a huge factor for us. It is true every year. I've got to think that they carry a lot of weight when it comes to bowl selection," said UI Head Coach Kirk Ferentz in recognition of the fact that the fan support always afforded the Hawkeyes always influences the decision-making of bowl selection committees.

"They turn out no matter where we go, and believe me, we don't take that for granted."

Nate Kaeding -- shown here after scoring a touchdown against Ohio State during his senior season -- kicked a 47-yard field goal to give Iowa a 19-16 victory in the 2001 Alamo Bowl against Texas Tech. Iowa has accepted an invitation to return to San Antonio for this year's Alamo Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 30.

2006 University of Iowa football season ticket holders will also receive an application for tickets to the 2006 Alamo Bowl in the mail early next week.

As always, the University of Iowa Alumni Association and Winebrenner Travel are providing tours to the UI's bowl game destination. Both organizations offer excellent options for fans of the Hawkeyes seeking a turn-key bowl game experience.

Iowa will ride a two-game winning streak in Alamo Bowl games into this year's event. In addition to the aforementioned victory over Texas Tech, the Hawkeyes also defeated the Red Raiders by a 27-0 count in the 1996 game. California defeated Iowa in the inaugural Alamo Bowl staged Dec. 31, 1993.

The Hawkeyes' appearance in the 2006 Alamo Bowl will be Iowa's 22nd in post-season bowl games. The UI has an 11-9-1 record in post-season play. Iowa's total of 22 bowl games ranks behind only Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten Conference. Iowa, Penn State and Purdue are the only Big Ten teams with winning records in post-season bowl games.
