Kathy Moe's mom and sister sporting the classic Hawkeye apparel.
Dec. 24, 2010
IOWA CITY, Iowa - In the holiday season of giving and sharing, the UI Athletics Department invited the greatest fans in the world to share their most memorable black-and-gold experience. The wide variety of responses were full of unforgettable memories and reminiscent of why, "It's Great to be a Hawkeye!" After having the privilege of reading each submission, a total of seven lucky winners were selected for online publication. We will post one entry per day on hawkeyesports.com from Dec. 21-27. Today's entry comes from Kathy Moe in Ottawa, IL:
"My most memorable Hawkeye memory was in 1985 when Iowa was ranked #1 in football and played #2 Michigan. As all you Hawkeye fans know, Iowa won that game with a winning field goal with two seconds to go! I was sitting in the opposite end zone with my parents and my sister, Linda, and it was so nerve-racking waiting to see if we would win or lose. We were sitting with Iowa and Michigan fans mixed in so it had been an interesting game.
When Rob kicked the field goal, the stadium ERUPTED and everyone ran on the field... it was AMAZING! Everyone should have a chance to go to a game like that! Also, during the game Iowa had a touchdown taken away from them and my dad got a picture of it and sent the picture to Hayden Fry and he sent a personal letter back. So nice!
My dad, Max, is 76 and has been a Hawkeye forever. He is from Ottumwa, but moved to Illinois when he met and married my mom, Mary Lou, in 1960. We went to many games while I was growing up, football and basketball, and I remember my dad putting up antennas to try to get a clearer picture while watching them through the static. Funny! Same way with trying to listen on the radio; sometimes the stations would fade in and out. Guess that's what happens when you live in central Illinois.
I don't think my dad misses a football or basketball game Iowa plays on TV or radio. Though my mom and sister have both passed away, I am glad I have so many great memories of going to the games with them and my dad. I am glad I got to be a Hawkeye fan, they are the best! Go Hawks!"
