The scope of work for this component of the project is the repair and modernization of existing and outdated components serving both fans and student-athletes. Built in 1929, much of the stadium's infrastructure in antiquated and does not appropriate serve visitors to the stadium. The size and organization of the east and west concourses were built for a different time and for a smaller number of fans. The plumbing systems serving the concourses have been repaired through the years but are in desperate need of modernization.

The south end zone structure, originally built in 1972, has seen various additions, but the original systems remains in place. The University has engaged a structural engineer who has performed an annual analysis of the structural system that supports the south bleacher system. The is portion of the stadium remains the only seating area not supported by a permanent structure.

The south end zone's wooden plank seating and walkways are supported by tubular steel framing. The annual analysis identifies areas that have become damaged by rust and corrosion, and those areas are repaired before each season to provide a safe structural loading capacity.

In recent years the report has identified a probably remaining life span for the south end zone structural system. Currently, the structural system has been assigned an effective life span of less than five years. There remains no option other than the replacement of the system in total. Additional, the configuration of the south end zone creates egress difficulties and does not provide easy access for persons with disabilities.

Scope of Work

  • Demolish and replace the existing south end zone bleacher seating and structural system
  • Construct a south concourse below the new seating system that will contain code required restrooms, concessions stands and game-day support spaces
  • Renovate and upgrade the existing east and west concourse to improve fan traffic flow, to meet current codes for restrooms and to provide concession stands
  • Create improved ADA access route and seating
  • Create improved ingress and egress route for all fans
  • Replace outdated plumbing serving concessions and restrooms located beneath the east and west concourses
  • Relocate football team locker rooms and support spaces to an area beneath the south end zone to provide for safer team access to the field, and to make east concourse space available for code required restrooms
  • Replace existing scoreboard and outdated sound system to address fan needs
