Kinnick Stadium Renovation

Celebration of 75 Years

The proposed renovation is intended to be consistent with campus-wide goals outlined in the University's Stadium Drive Area Master Plan. Among other long-term goals, the plan encourages the development of efficient transportation and circulation systems that promote a pedestrian friendly environment and provide a safe and enjoyable game-day experience for the many visitors to Kinnick Stadium.

Additionally, the Kinnick Stadium site at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Hawkins Drive has been identified as a major entry point to the University of Iowa campus. To date, this site has not communicated this important campus feature. Kinnick Stadium also lacks a major entry feature, and as such, pedestrian traffic patterns on game days have remained a constant problem, sacrificing safety and convenience for those trying to enter and exit the stadium. With heightened security issues, Kinnick Stadium has joined a national trend in prohibiting re-entry to the stadium once entrance is gained. This has created a new need to provide more accessible open space within the stadium confines for pedestrian traffic during the game.

The intent of the design is to create a plaza south of the stadium that represents a campus entrance and also acts as a main entrance to the stadium from the south. Programming and design of this plaza will allow it to become a gathering area within the stadium once the game starts, thus providing for improvements in circulation.

West campus growth and development have created the need to add to the West Campus Chilled Water Plant located north of Kinnick Stadium. The project description and budget was approved by the Board of Regents at the October 2003 meeting. The extension of the chill water to expanded UIHC and other University facilities along Melrose Avenue will require a utility pathway through the existing parking lot (University Lot 43) west of the stadium. The north portion of Lot 43 was recently replaced and is not affected by either the utility work or the Kinnick Stadium project. The south portion of Lot 43 is in need of replacement and better parking space organization. The replacement of this portion of Lot 43 would increase parking available for faculty and staff working at UIHC or in the vicinity. These two campus projects would be timed to be coordinated with the renovation of the stadium.

Scope of work

  • Replacement of the deteriorating parking lot 43 west of the stadium to increase game-day and non-game-day parking spaces
  • Paving work to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic through and around the site
  • Underground utility extensions through the site, adjacent to and west of Kinnick Stadium
  • Improvements to security, safety and game-day amenities through additional south end zone structures
  • Creation of a new campus entry setting to function on game days as a main entry to Kinnick Stadium from Melrose Avenue
