IOWA CITY, Iowa – – Ron Stewart, who served as director of football security under University of Iowa head coaches Hayden Fry and Kirk Ferentz, passed away Sunday morning in Des Moines. He was 76.
Stewart began working with the Iowa football program in 1982 under Fry, and worked his final game at the conclusion of the 2014 season.
Stewart retired from his position as a Polk County deputy sheriff in 1997 following 30 years of service. He was a lifelong resident of the Des Moines area following his graduation from Saydel High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps for three years and then continued his service with the Marine Corps Reserve.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 13, from 5-8 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines (north on Second Ave. exit from Interstate 80). Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Avenue in Clive.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Cara, son Don Quijano, daughter, Amy Stewart Hunt, and grandson, Andrew Hunt, along with siblings, William (Barbara) Stewart and Judith (Larry) Lee. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
