IOWA CITY, Iowa – – Former University of Iowa running back Dennis Green passed away Thursday night due to complications from cardiac arrest. He was 67.
Green lettered for the Hawkeyes from 1968-70, and later served as an Iowa assistant coach from 1974-76. During his career, Green rushed 139 times for 699 yards and nine touchdowns. His top single game came in a 1968 loss to TCU when he rushed 18 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns.
Green played one year of professional football in the Canadian Football League before beginning his career in coaching. After serving as an assistant with the Hawkeyes, Green was the head coach at Northwestern (1981-85) and Stanford (1989-91). He was named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year in 1982.
Green later served as the head coach of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings (1992-2001) and Arizona Cardinals (2004-06), posting a career mark of 113-94. He led the Vikings to eight playoff appearances, reaching the NFC championship game in 1998 and 2000. He ranks second in Vikings game coached, wins, and winning percentage.
