MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened its fall season Thursday at the Gopher Invite in Minneapolis. The tournament opened with a round of doubles matches, and the Hawkeyes finished the night 3-5 overall.

Following opening round losses, three of Iowa’s four doubles team bounced back with wins to advance to the consolation semifinals.

“It was great to compete tonight and have each team get in two doubles matches,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “We learned a lot and we have had great discussions as a team with a focus on playing aggressive doubles. I saw improvement from our first round to our second round, and we just need to keep that pattern of improving from match to match.”

After falling 7-6 in the opening round, freshman Elise van Heuvelen and junior Zoe Douglas flipped the score to defeat Iowa State’s doubles team, 7-6, on the back side of the bracket.

Sophomores Adorabol Huckleby and Carin Runefelt fell, 6-2, to South Dakota State in the opening round, but bounced back to defeat Iowa State in their second match, 6-1.

The Hawkeyes’ third consolation semifinalist, Montana Crawford and Taylor Tamblyn, lost to San Jose State in the opening round, but responded with a 6-0 win over South Dakota State to end day one for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa’s Aimee Tarun and Anastasia Reimchen dropped consecutive matches, 6-4, 7-6, and were bounced from Thursday’s doubles draw.

The Gopher Invite continues tomorrow in Minneapolis. Two rounds of doubles begin at 9 a.m. (CT), and two rounds of singles begin at 11 a.m. (CT). A live video stream is available at gophersports.com
