EAST LANSING, Mich. — University of Iowa men’s tennis freshman Will Davies and Piotr Smietana won three doubles matches to finish runners-up at the Big Ten Indoor Doubles Tournament on Friday at the Michigan State’s Indoor Tennis Facility.

Davies and Smietana ultimately fell to Brown and Crocker of Michigan, 8-4, in the championship match.

“Piotr and Will were able to sustain a high level of energy of play today making it to the finals today,” said UI head coach Ross Wilson. “They were able to win two tough tiebreakers against Ohio State and Northwestern.”

In other action, Kareem Allaf and Joe Tyler defeated a pair from Northwestern, 8-6. Allaf and Tyler lost their quarterfinals matchup, but battled back for a consolation win over Northwestern’s Joshi and Seidman, 8-4.

Jake Jacoby and Jonas Larsen lost their only match of the day, 8-7(7).

The Hawkeyes had a good first day going 6-3 overall (Jason Kerst played doubles with a Penn State athlete).

“We are hoping to build on the success in doubles going into singles tomorrow,” Wilson said.
