FAYETTEVILLE, AR. — The Hawkeye track and field team capped off the final day of the Tyson Invitational with a school record in the men’s 4×400-meter relay.

The relay team of freshman Emmanuel Ogwo, sophomore Collin Hofacker, sophomore DeJuan Frye, and sophomore Mar’yea Harris finished with a time of 3:05.62, besting the previous school record by over a second, which was set in 2011.

“It was a great day today,” UI director of track and field said. “To go out and finish with a big time school record by over a second was impressive.”

Arguably, the most impressive thing about the relay was that they did it without senior Aaron Mallet, who was on Iowa’s previous relay that was third in Iowa history before today.

“Any time you want to have a good 4x400m relay, you have to have around eight options,” Woody said. “You look at who we had on the relay at this time last year, we had Carter Lilly and Mitch Wolff, so it looks very different, but you never know how the race is going to go until you run it.”

A day after predicting that the relay team would do something special, Woody’s prediction came true.

“You never know until you run the race but looking ahead we can still improve by quite a bit,” Woody said.

Other impressive performances included sophomore Briana Guillory and freshman Gillian Urycki.

Guillory had a great day running. She ran 23.8 seconds in the 200m, which is the first time this year she had run under 24 seconds,” Woody said.

Urycki set a collegiate best in the women’s high jump to place fourth overall. The mix of major records and improvements by the freshmen gave Woody something to look forward to next week.

“Overall it was a good day for the Hawkeyes,” Woody said.

Iowa returns to action next weekend with the Iowa Open and the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The Iowa Open is Iowa’s final home meet of the indoor season.
