MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team completed its four-match road trip with a 4-2 victory over Minnesota Saturday. The Hawkeyes improve to 13-3 and 3-1 in the Big Ten.
“I’m really proud of the team for a hard fought win over a good Minnesota team,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “I have a ton of respect for Minnesota, they are a well-coached team. Our girls played their hearts out in singles for each other. This was a great win for our program.”
Despite dropping the doubles points, the Hawkeyes were able to pick up four singles victories to defeat the Golden Gophers. Freshman Elise van Heuvelen got it started for the Hawkeyes defeating Caroline Ryba in straight sets, 6-1 6-1.
Sophomore Adorabol Huckleby was next of the court defeating Annemarie Emme in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 4 singles position. Junior Anastasia Reimchen was fourth off the court. Reimchen won at the No. 3 position, taking down Barbara Mancera in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
Junior Montana Crawford picked up a win at the No. 6 position. Crawford defeated Mehvish Safdar, 7-6 6-4, to secure the 4-2 victory for Iowa.
The Hawkeyes return home next weekend as they host a pair of Big Ten matches. Iowa faces Illinois at 2 p.m. (CT) on Friday, and No. 47 Northwestern at 2 p.m. (CT) on Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
