Knoll Leads Iowa on Day 1 of B1G Championships

BALTIMORE, Md. — University of Iowa senior Raymond Knoll fired an even-par 70 to lead the men’s golf team in the opening round of the Big Ten Championships on Friday afternoon. The Hawkeyes are in ninth place (294; +14) with 36 holes left to play. The tournament is being played at Baltimore Country Club.
 
34529No. 9 Illinois leads the 14-team field at eleven-under-par 269. They are the only team that posted an under par round today.

“If you look at our cards we were 15 over the last five holes,” said UI Head Coach Tyler Stith. “We have to finish better to be competitive on the weekend.”
 
Knoll utilized three birdies and 15 holes at or below par en route to the even par 70 to open the championship. He is tied for ninth overall. Sophomore Matthew Walker followed behind Knoll posting a three-over-par 73, firing two birdies on the round. Walker sits in a tie for 29th. 
 
Freshman Jack Simpson registered a 74 (+4), recording three birdies and 12 holes at or below par. He is currently tied for 40th heading into Saturday’s second round.  
 
Senior Carson Schaake carded a 77 (+7) in the opening round. He carded 10 holes at or below par and is tied for 56th. Freshman Alex Schaake rounded out the Iowa lineup posting an eight-over-par 78, he recorded two birdies on the difficult front nine. Schaake is tied for 61st.

“We have two rounds remaining and still a lot to play for,” added Stith.
