BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The No. 13 University of Iowa rowing team defeated Big Ten rival Rutgers but fell in close racing to No. 4 Ohio State at the Big Ten Double Dual Regatta hosted by Indiana University.

Seasonal temperatures and building cross head winds were the conditions of the day on Lake Lemon. The 6-8 mph cross head winds created testy conditions and slower times than normal for the racing crews, but the Lake Lemon course but the course offered fair lanes for a good day of racing.

The Hawkeyes won the morning session over Big Ten rival Rutgers by sweeping the Scarlet Knights in all contested boat classes.  Each race saw the Hawks get out to early leads and they continued to stretch those advantages over the entire course.  Finish margins included 33 seconds in the I Eight, 30 in the II Eight, 51 in the I Four, 44 in the II Four, and 32 in the I Novice Eight.

With Rutgers not fielding crews in the III Four, the Hawks took to the water against Ohio State and Indiana for both the morning and afternoon rounds of racing.  In both races, the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes separated themselves early from the Hoosiers with Ohio State eventually pulling away from Iowa, who finished in the runner up position.

Neither Rutgers nor Indiana fielded crews in the II Novice Eight.  That pitted the Hawkeyes against Ohio State in both the morning and afternoon sessions.  The II Novice crews offered up some of the most exciting racing of the day with the Hawks and Buckeyes rowing bowball-to-bowball the entire length of the course.  Not until the closing stages did one crew find the slightest advantage and in both cases it was the Hawkeyes.  The morning win was a mere 0.5 second win and the afternoon was 1.3.

The afternoon was the much-anticipated match between No. 13 Iowa and No. 4 Ohio State.  While the Hawks fell to the four-time defending Big Ten Champions, the racing was tight in the critical NCAA boat classes of the I Eight, II Eight, and I Four.

Each of those events unfolded in similar fashion with the Buckeyes being forced to settle for virtually no advantage over the first half of the 2000m course.  Ohio State mounted impressive moves as they crossed into the third 500m to establish ¾ boat-length leads.  In each race, the Hawks were able to maintain position for much of the next 750m as they worked to position themselves for their finishing sprint.  Again, in each race, the Hawks’ sprint was impressive as they worked back into the Buckeye lead.  At the finish, they had shaved the margins down to a mere 1.5 seconds in the I Eight, 2.3 seconds in the II Eight, and 1.8 in the I Four.

“I was very proud of how our crews raced today,” said head coach Andrew Carter.  “From our newest rowers in the II Novice Eight to our most experienced in our I Eight, they showed tremendous grit today.  Racing against a team with the track record of Ohio State is no easy task but our crews really showed they were prepared to be there.Like last week, there was a great deal of composure in our crews.  It can be easy to succumb to the stress of tight racing against a top team like Ohio State but our women stayed focused on the task and fought the full length of the course.  Full credit to them.”

The Hawkeyes travel to Princeton, New Jersey to compete against Princeton, Syracuse and the University of Pennsylvania on April 29
