IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 12 University of Iowa rowing was selected for the 2017 NCAA Rowing Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey, the NCAA committee announced Tuesday. The Hawkeyes are one of 22 teams who will compete on Lake Mercer on May 26-28.
“This selection says great things about our program,” said UI head coach Andrew Carter. “We’re working with the right materials. The women on this team are fantastic. They’ve done everything we’ve asked of them and then some. The trajectory that we have moving up one place in the Big Ten Championships every year that I’ve been here for the past four years, increasing points in the Big Ten Championships, setting records, it’s because of the hard work the women put in day in and day out. We’re on the right path and it’s a lot of fun to be a part of.”
This is the second NCAA berth in program history. The Hawkeyes competed at the Championships in 2001, where they finished in ninth place with 18 points.
“Seeing our name pop up was unbelievable,” said senior Kat Tillman. “I’ve never experienced anything like it. We have worked so hard this year, and to go to NCAAs means the world to us. All our hard work paid off.”
The teams will compete at the NCAA Championships in four heats over three days. Each team will field a I Eight, II Eight, and I Four crew. Iowa is seeded No. 15 in the I Eight, No. 13 in the II Eight, and No. 16 in the I Four.
The Hawkeyes enter the NCAA Championships ranked No. 12 in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I Collegiate Rowing Poll. This season, the Hawkeyes reached a record-high No. 11 in the rankings April 25.
The Hawkeyes will be joined at the NCAA Championships by fellow Big Ten teams Ohio State, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
