MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Senior Josh Silverstein and sophomore Kareem Allaf represented the University of Iowa men’s tennis team on day two of the  42nd annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Friday.

Top-seeded Silverstein rolled Wisconsin’s Matim Viela (6-2, 6-3) in his first match of the day.

Allaf was unable to win his first singles match, falling to Josh Howard-Tripp of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-2. Allaf will see action on Satutrday in the consolation bracket.

Silverstein resumed singles play against Alex Ribeiro from Virginia Tech. Silverstein dropped the first set but showed great resiliency, falling behind 5-7 in the first set.

“I was up 5-2 in the first set and lost complete focus and ended up dropping that set, 7-5. I refocused and gave him my best game in the next sets, just stayed smart and it worked out for me,” said Silverstein.

The Hawkeye senior battled back for a come-from-behind win versus Ribeiro (5-7, 6-0, 6-4).

“Josh had a great day. It’s great to see him start off his senior season with two quality wins. Tomorrow will be another test against an accomplished player,” said assistant coach Matt Hagan.

The Hawkeyes continued in doubles action in the afternoon with Silverstein and Allaf squaring off against Virginia Tech’s Donato and Harper. Iowa dominated the match, 8-2, and is on to the semifinals of the tournament.

The Milwaukee Tennis Classic is an ITA Gold Level Event; its men’s singles champion will receive an invitation to compete in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California.
