IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa soccer team fell 2-0 to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

The Hawkeyes and the Buckeyes took to the pitch in near record temperatures for a late September day and the on field action reflected it. Both teams struggled to score in the first half, taking a total of 11 shots collectively in a scoreless half.

After the break, Ohio State fired a goal into the net off a free kick and went ahead 1-0 in the 55th minute. Then minutes later they shot the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Claire Graves a second time to take a 2-0 lead.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“We are frustrated. The approach to the first half was great; the kids battled and worked hard, but we made too many mistakes that cost us points. The set piece goal once again hurt us; we have given up too many of those this year. I am happy with the effort and the commitment to compete on Friday and Sunday against two strong opponents.”

On Ohio State’s second goal…
“We gave the ball up about five second before that. Everyone looks at the goal, but we gave the ball up with two players open in the middle. What happened in the second half is that we just stopped playing. Whether we got tired or got undisciplined with that one play. Unfortunately, we didn’t recover and the ball kind of got banged around.”
