IOWA CITY, Iowa —  Sophomore Natalie Winters scored off a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to send the University of Iowa women’s soccer team past Montana, 1-0, on Friday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes improve their record to 5-1.

Winters picked up her first goal of the season following a Montana hand ball in the box.

KEY HAWKEYE PERFORMER
Sophomore goalkeeper Claire Graves nabbed her third shutout of the season, collecting four saves against the Grizzlies.

STAT OF THE GAME
Iowa outshot Montana, 12-7.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“The one thing we weren’t ready for and we don’t see a lot in the Big Ten is teams that are as direct as Montana was. They’re big, strong, and athletic for a Big Sky team. I thought Rachele Armand, Morgan Kemmerling, Corey Burns, and Hannah Drkulec played well in that game today.”

What to improve on before Big Ten play…
“We need to get healthier. We’re a little banged up right now, but ultimately we need to finish our opportunities and quality. The final 25 yards is not as good as it needs to be, but other than that I was happy with how our kids played.”

On Friday’s win…
“The win today was fantastic. It gives our kids an opportunity to play in a tight game that was physical. We lost a lot of these games last year, so we’ve won a couple of them already and we’re making progress.”

On Seniors…
“Our seniors have been through the highs and the lows. I feel like we’re getting back into the highs this year. I’ve never coached a program that was successful when the seniors weren’t the hardest working people on the team. That speaks to this program right now.”

NOTABLES

  • The Hawkeyes are undefeated this season (5-0) when scoring first.
  • Iowa celebrated recognized eight seniors before Friday’s win: Laura Lainson, Madeline Crowdy, Rachele Armand, Karly Stuenkel, Tina Cardamone, Katharine Woodruff, Corey Burns, and Aubree Larson.
