Note: The following is the introduction of the five-year strategic plan presented to
The University of Iowa Athletics Department presents this five-year strategic plan as evidence of
its commitment to its student-centered mission. This plan enables us to reach our primary goal of
creating a culture of academic and athletic success--one that provides the means and the inspiration
for student-athletes to earn diplomas, to compete for championships at the Big Ten Conference and
national level, and to prepare to be leaders in their personal and professional lives. We pledge our
energy and resources to ensuring that "Today's Hawkeyes are Tomorrow's Leaders."
Intercollegiate athletics is one of the most visible events that occurs on The University of Iowa
campus. Success on and off the playing field/court is a source of pride for everyone associated with
the Iowa Hawkeyes. This plan is a "road map" to the future, making our program better and doing
so with focus and integrity.
In 2005, The University of Iowa unveiled a campus-wide five-year strategic plan, The Iowa Promise.
The key word "promise" in the title signifies both the University's potential for greatness and its
responsibility to those it is intended to serve. The Athletics Department recognizes its role in
carrying out this promise and supports the University's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
In fact, the key goals of the Athletics Department's Strategic Plan are targeted at Undergraduate
Education, Competitive Success, Diversity, Vitality, and Engagement, areas that are cornerstones
of the overall University plan. We purposely choose in both our words and actions to affirm our
connection to and support of the University's goals.
Our department consists of a team of nearly 200 staff and coaches and 650 student-athletes who
dedicate their energies and talents on a daily basis to achieving excellence as representatives of The
University of Iowa. The strategic planning process began in the fall of 2006 when all members of
the "team" had the opportunity to submit ideas about the direction and growth of the Athletics
Department. These contributions were organized so that all received consideration. During the
summer and fall of 2007, Athletics Department senior staff worked in collaboration with the
President's Committee on Athletics (PCA) and other members of the university community to
develop the final draft.
The result of these diligent efforts is a five-year plan for the Athletics Department. This Strategic
Plan will be an active document, used and referred to on a regular basis by all who are engaged in
achieving the Athletics Department's student-centered mission.
