The University of Iowa spirit squads consists of the Iowa cheerleaders, the Iowa dance team and the Herky the Hawk. The program is at the forefront of the University of Iowa , providing `Black and Gold' not only at a myriad of intercollegiate athletics and UI campus community events staged annually at the University of Iowa, but throughout the state and nationally. The Iowa spirit squads are under the supervision of the University of Iowa Athletics Department.
The Iowa spirit squads provide leadership and entertainment for the 70,000 fans who routinely fill Kinnick Stadium to capacity for the home games of the nationally-ranked UI football team and crowds of up to 15,500 who cheer Iowa's men's and women's basketball, wrestling and volleyball teams in events staged inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The University of Iowa is a member of the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and as such competes for conference and national championships in 24 varsity sports.
The student-athletes that make up the Iowa spirit squads are full-time ambassadors for the University of Iowa. Not only do they perform at athletics events at the UI, but they also participate in public outreach events throughout the year, attend UCA/UDA camp in the summer, travel to postseason bowl games and men's and women's basketball tournaments, and compete nationally at UCA/UDA competitions.
And they do all of this while being full-time undergraduate students at the University of Iowa, one of the nation's premiere public research institutions.
The Iowa dance team is made up of the best overall dancers at the University of Iowa. This team performs at UI football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, wrestling and other athletics events deemed necessary by the UI Athletics Department. As a Spirit Squad member you are a representative not only of the athletic teams you support at this University, but also the entire State of Iowa. You are the most visible ambassadors we have and you are expected to conduct yourself accordingly on and off the playing field.
The proud tradition of the Iowa Spirit Squad is carried on by over 50 dedicated student-athletes who devote 15-20 hours every week to practices, games, special appearances, camps and competitions. Like all student-athletes at the University of Iowa, Iowa Dance Team members must maintain high academic standards and carry a full credit load in order to participate.
Because of these responsibilities, we are looking for skilled and talented athletes, as well as well-rounded students, who embrace the ability to be coached. Iowa dance team members must be able to find a healthy balance between athletics, school, family and friends. Our team members come from all over the nation and have very diverse dance backgrounds. We perform pom, jazz and hip hop routines throughout the year. The Iowa dance team knows that as it improves as individuals, their team improves as well, and the rewards from having this experience cannot be measured. Imagine performing in front of 70,000 people inside Kinnick Stadium, or breaking attendance records at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the nation's top wrestling program! The ultimate goal each season for the Iowa dance team is to compete against some of the top dance programs in the nation with the opportunity to be showcased on ESPN!
Every once in awhile you come across an opportunity and make a decision that will change your life forever. The Iowa dance team is a family and performing for the Hawkeyes is an experience that you will never forget!
