Pat McGhee, an all-American while competing for the Hawkeyes, is in his 15th season as an assistant coach at Iowa. McGhee serves primarily as hurdling, jumps and sprints coach, but is involved in all facets of the squad. He has established a strong Hawkeye sprinting and hurdling corps as those groups have continued to develop and gain national recognition. McGhee has trained 25 all-Americans and 39 Big Ten champions at Iowa. In 2004, hurdlers Russell Peterson and Tony Leick and Iowa's 1,600-meter relay qualified to the NCAA Midwest Regional. Peterson advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter hurdles, holding the fourth-best time in school history in that event. McGhee has coached Iowa's 400-meter relays to titles at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships three of the last seven seasons. Under McGhee, Iowa's 1,600-meter relays have qualified for the NCAA Championships eight of the last 10 seasons. The Hawkeyes' most recent qualifying quartet of Juan Coleman, Scott Faber, Russell Peterson and Ryan Strang in 2002, ran the second-fastest indoor time in school history.
Former Hawkeyes George Page, Andre Morris, Dion Trowers, Monte Raymond and Russell Peterson also benefited from McGhee's teaching. Page was a two-time all-American, two-time 100-meter and 1997 200-meter indoor Big Ten Champion. He also holds the 100-meter school record of 10.25. Morris was a two-time 400-meter outdoor Big Ten Champion and a two-time all-American. Trowers was a 55-meter hurdle Big Ten Champion and all-American in 1998. He holds Iowa's second-fastest time (to McGhee) in both the 55 and 110-meter hurdles. Raymond holds the second-fastest Iowa 400-meter hurdle time (to McGhee). Peterson was a five-time NCAA qualifier in the sprints and hurdles. He is ranked in Iowa's top 10 in six different events. At Iowa, McGhee earned all-America honors in 1988 and 1989, placing second at the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. He tied for fifth in the 110-high hurdles in 1989. He won both events at the 1989 Big Ten meet, earning Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Meet honors. McGhee placed eighth the 1988 Olympic Trials and sixth at the 1992 Olympic Trials. While he was competing, McGhee was ranked as high at 10th in the world in the 400-meter hurdles. McGhee's competition has taken him to the European circuit and all over the world, competing in such countries as Finland, England, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Spain, Germany and French Martinique. McGhee received his B.S. degree in general studies with an emphasis in art education from Iowa in 1989. He has a son, Tavin (4), and a daughter, Nyna (3). |
