AMES, Iowa -- University of Iowa track and field athletes Kyle Reid and Jack Eckert are in eighth and ninth place, respectively, following the first day of the men's heptathlon at the Bill Bergan Invitational on Thursday.
Reid, a senior, recorded personal bests in the 60 meter dash, long jump, and shot put. Reid ran to a fourth-place finish in the 60 meters, clocking a time of 7.28-seconds. His long jump leap of 20-feet-7 (6.27m) earned him a seventh-place finish, while his shot put toss of 40-7 ½ (12.38m) was good enough for fifth place. Reid also competed in the high jump where he finished 10th with a leap of 5-10 ½ (1.79m). Reid finished the day with 2,679 points.
Eckert recorded a personal-best finish in the 60. The junior crossed the line in 7.49 to place ninth. Eckert also recorded a ninth-place finish in the long jump (19-0 ¼; 5.80m), and an eighth-place finish in the shot put (38-4; 11.68m). His highest finish of the day came in the high jump, where he was seventh with a leap of 6-0 ¾ (1.85m). Eckert finished the day with 2,517 points.
Action in the heptathlon resumes Friday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. (CT).
