TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Inclement weather cancelled most of the Alabama Relays on Saturday, but not before University of Iowa track and field athlete Jasmine Simpson recorded a school record setting hammer throw mark. After lightning caused a one-hour, 25-minute delay at 6:55 p.m., the severe weather returned shortly before 9 p.m. causing the remainder of the event to be canceled.

Simpson, a junior, recorded a school record setting toss of 197-7 (60.23m) to capture a first-place finish in the women's hammer throw. Simpson annihilated her previous best of 181-10 (55.42m). Sophomore Annemie Smith grabbed a third-place finish in the event. Smith recorded a toss of 187-6 (57.16m).

"Jasmine Simpson set the tone for our group this spring and challenged everyone with her incredible performance," Layne Anderson, head track and field coach, said. "We shall work diligently to get the team as a whole performing at a similar level."

Ethan Holmes ran to a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. The senior crossed the line in 13.95. Holmes also ran third-leg on the first-place finishing 400-meter relay team. The team of junior Tevin-Cee Mincy, senior Justin Austin, Holmes and senior Josh Larney clocked a time of 40.22.

Sophomore Gabe Hull earned a second-place finish in the discus. Hull recorded a toss of 182-3 (55.54m). Majesty Tutson captured a second-place finish in the women's discus. The senior recorded a toss of 170-5 (51.95m). Freshman Dakotah Goodell finished fifth in the event (149-0; 45.41m), while junior Courtney Fritz finished seventh (139-6; 42.51m).

The men's distance medley relay team of freshman Caleb Wilfong, senior Kyle Slaymaker, freshman Will Teubel, and sophomore Ben Witt captured a third-place finish. The team clocked a time of 9:54.05. That time ranks sixth all-time at Iowa.

The women's 400-meter relay team of freshman Lake Kwaza, junior Raven Moore, freshman MonTayla Holder and freshman Taylor Lynch ran to a fourth place finish. The quartet clocked a time of 46.46.

"We came to Alabama for some good weather and we definitely didn't get it," Larry Wieczorek, director of track and field, said. "Despite the elements, we had some great performances to kick off the outdoor season."

Iowa will travel to Pella, Iowa, on March 28 for the Central Invite before heading to the Stanford Invite in Palo Alto, Calif., on March 29-30.
