TEMPE, Ariz. -- University of Iowa junior Annemie Smith set a hammer throw school record with a toss of 198-1 (60.38m) at the Arizona State Invitational on Friday.
Smith won the event and bested her previous personal-record by nearly three meters to claim the school record previously held by teammate Jasmine Simpson.
"Annemie really stepped up today," said UI assistant coach Scott Cappos. "She has been slowly improving and this breakthrough has been a long time coming."
Junior Sam Joens won the men's javelin with a mark of 199-11 (60.93m), and sophomore Dakotah Goodell set a personal-best in the women's javelin with a mark of 139-04 (42.47m). Goodell placed third overall, one spot behind teammate Amanda Stahle (140-4, 42.77m).
"All of the athletes performed great," added Cappos. "It was an outstanding first day for the team."
The hammer and javelin were the only events contested on Day 1 of the Arizona State Invitational. Competition resumes tomorrow with field events at 11 a.m. (CT). Running events start at 12:55 p.m. (CT).
