34 Hawkeyes NCAA Bound

2012 West Regional Schedule of Events IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The NCAA announced today that 34 student-athletes from the University of Iowa have qualified for the 2012 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships. The NCAA West Preliminary Round will be held May 24-26 in Austin, Texas, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The men's team is represented by a total of 28 qualifiers, made up of 20 student-athletes competing in 13 individual events and two relays. Since 2003, the men's team has sent a total of 189 qualifiers to the NCAA preliminary round. The Iowa men are seeded 10th or higher in six events. Troy Doris is the highest seeded Hawkeye. He is the No. 2 triple jumper in the West Regional with a qualifying mark of 54-8 (16.66m). The women's team will send 17 qualifiers, with 14 student-athletes competing in eight individual events and one relay. Since 2003, the women's team has sent 147 qualifiers to the NCAA preliminary round. Sophomore Ashley Liverpool and senior McKenzie Melander are the highest seeded Hawkeyes. Melander, the Big Ten champion in the 5,000 meters, is seeded sixth with a team-leading time of 15:57.13. Liverpool, the Big Ten runner-up in the 400 meters, earned the No. 6 seed with a career-best qualifying time of 52.47. The top 12 individuals or relays in each event from each preliminary site (East and West) will move on to the final NCAA Championship round in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 6-9.
