Iowa Track and Field Opens Indoor Season

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa track and field team opens its 2012-2013 season with the Black and Gold Intrasquad meet Saturday. The event will be held at the UI Recreation Building beginning at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to park in Lot 43 west of Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeye men's team returns two second team outdoor all-Americans in seniors Justin Austin and Matt Byers. Austin earned second team all-America accolades when he finished 13th in the 200 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Byers claimed the honors when he finished 10th in the javelin. Ethan Holmes earned a pair of honorable mention all-America honors following a 19th place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and an 18th place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. The women's team welcomes back Mareike Schrulle. The graduate student just wrapped up a successful 2012 cross country campaign where she finished seventh at the NCAA Championships. Schrulle's best 5,000 meter indoor time of 16:29.41 currently ranks 10th all-time at Iowa, while her personal best outdoor 5,000 meter time (16:13.73) ranks seventh.
