CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The Austin Peay pitching staff held the University of Iowa baseball team to just one run Sunday to lead the Governors to a 6-1 victory over the Hawkeyes at Raymond C. Hand Park.

"I was a little disappointed today," said UI head coach Jack Dahm. "We were not very sharp defensively and we didn't finish some plays off. We had plenty of opportunities. Even though we didn't play very well early, we had put ourselves in position to win or the tie the game with guys in scoring position late and we didn't have good at-bats in those situation. We'll clean that up and look forward to heading down to Texas."

Four different pitchers scattered eight hits for Austin Peay. Starter A.J. Gaura threw six and one-third innings, allowing only one earned run to pick up the win for the Governors. Gaura was relieved by Jared Carkuff, Hunter Lindley, and Tyler Rogers. The trio of relievers teamed to pitch two and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Offensively, Austin Peay got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Reed Hudson opened the frame with a home run. The Governors scored their second run of the inning after a Hawkeye fielding error.

The Hawkeyes responded in the next half inning, as sophomore Nick Day hit a solo blast over the left field fence to make score 2-1. It was the first home run of Day's collegiate career.

Austin Peay (2-1) tacked on two more runs in the fifth, extending its lead to 4-1. Rolando Gautier doubled home the first run. Gautier would later score after being walked home.

Iowa (1-2) had scoring chances in the seventh and eighth innings, but could not capitalize. In the seventh, the Hawkeyes loaded the bases with just one out, forcing Austin Peay to go to its bullpen. Carkuff entered the contest and ended Iowa's hopes by striking out the next two batters.

Sophomore Eric Toole opened the Hawkeye half of the eighth with a double down the left field line. Toole advanced to third on the play after a throwing error. Iowa was unable to drive Toole home, as Lindley retired the next three batters in order.

The Governors added two insurance runs in their half of the eighth. Both runs scored after Dylan Riner doubled to right center.

Freshman Calvin Mathews started the first game of his collegiate career for the Hawkeyes. Mathews threw four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (three earned, one unearned) and striking out three.

Senior Andrew Hanse was once again solid out of the Iowa bullpen. The Marion, Iowa, native pitched two and one-third scoreless innings in his second appearance of the season. Hanse has yet to allow an earned run in 2013.

The Hawkeyes travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, next weekend to play in Kleberg Bank College Classic. Iowa opens tournament play Friday against No. 17 Oklahoma at 2 p.m. (CT), before facing New Mexico on Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT) and host-Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT). Texas A&M Corpus Christi will host the event at Whataburger Field, home of the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Houston Astros' double-A affiliate.
