Senior righthander Austin Seward threw six strong innings in picking up the win. He allowed just two hits and just one walk while striking out a pair.
Leadoff hitter Nate Price jump started the Iowa offense, going 3-of-4 with a stolen base and three RBIs. For the second-consecutive game, Price opened the first with a single and then stole second.
Iowa got its first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Price, then picked up three more in the third on three hits and a pair of Redbird errors.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawkeyes busted the game wide open with six runs on six hits and two more Illinois State errors. Iowa loaded the bases with no outs for freshman Kevin Hoef, who ripped a single up the middle for his first-career hit and RBI. Matt Wooldrik followed that with a pinch-hit RBI single, and Price brought home two with a base hit. Travis Sweet and Dusty Napoleon added RBI singles to round out the scoring.
The pitching staff took it from there, with Seward and freshmen Wes Freie and Justin Toole combining for the shutout. It was the first collegiate appearances on the mound for Freie and Toole. Freie allowed two hits in two innings, while Toole threw a hitless ninth to end the game.
The Hawkeyes will try and bring home the championship trophy for the Austin Peay Tournament tomorrow when they face the Dayton Flyers. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
