LAKELAND, Fla. -- The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Army (10-4), 5-1, on Friday at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla. The Hawkeyes were held scoreless after pushing across the game's first run in the opening inning. The game was part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Iowa ended the invitational with a 3-4 record and is 6-10 this season.
UI senior Mike McQuillan opened the game with a leadoff single for the Hawkeyes. The Evergreen, Ill., native would steal second before being driven in by a Phil Keppler single to left field. It was Keppler's first RBI this season.
The Army pitching staff shutout the Hawkeyes after the first inning, as starting pitcher Chris Rowley allowed two hits and no runs over the next six innings before handing the ball to Kevin McKague and Manny Fernandez. The Black Knights capitalized on two Iowa errors to score four runs in the fifth inning.
Junior Matt Dermody took the loss for the Hawkeyes. Dermody surrendered three earned runs over four and one-thirds innings.
Iowa returns to the diamond March 21. The Hawkeyes will host Grand View at Duane Banks Field at 4:05 p.m. (CT)
