After Iowa scored a pair of runs in the top half of the fifth to tie the game at two, Ohio State quickly regained the advantage when Kuhn strolled to the plate to lead off the bottom of the inning. The third baseman belted an 0-1 pitch against UI sophomore Jared Mandel over the left field fence to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead.
The Hawkeyes threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn't come up with the clutch hit. Sophomore Nick Roscetti was left stranded at third in the seventh after leading off the inning with an infield single, and Iowa put two runners on in the eighth but came up empty. Iowa left eight runners on base in the game.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first and runners on second and third in the second, Ohio State broke through for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Patrick Porter doubled down the left field line before UI starter Tyler Peyton plunked Josh Dezse to end his day.
Mandel retired the first batter he faced before Aaron Gretz singled home the first run to centerfield. Craig Nennig followed with an RBI double into the right centerfield gap, but the Hawkeyes threw out Dezse at the plate to keep the third run off the scoreboard.
Iowa strung together three straight singles in the top of the fifth inning to even the game at two. Junior Nick Day led off the frame with a one-out single to left field before junior Eric Toole followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners.
Junior Jake Mangler drove in the first Hawkeye run, bouncing an RBI single through the left side. After Toole advanced to third on a wild pitch, junior Jake Yacinich evened the game at two with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Mandel (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run on three hits over 3 2/3 innings. He had two strikeouts against no walks. Peyton threw 2 1/3 starts in his first start back from injury, but wasn't sharp. He allowed two runs on three hits and had three walks and a hit batter.
Iowa finished with nine hits in the contest with Mangler being the only player to post a multi-hit game. He finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Hawkeyes (26-17, 8-10) return to action Wednesday, hosting Upper Iowa at Banks Field beginning at 6 p.m. (CT).
