COLUMBUS, OH - The Iowa baseball team dropped a pitchers dual to Ohio State Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium, 5-4. Despite solid pitching from starter Phil Schreiber the Hawkeyes weren't able to hold off the Buckeyes.

Schreiber had a great outing on the mound for Iowa, going five innings and allowing only three runs on six hits in a no decision. The bullpen featured Steve Turnbull and Mike Schurz. Schurz went one inning, striking out two.

Iowa's offense was led by Wes Freie going 1-for-3 with a solo homer and an RBI sacrifice fly. Mike McQuillan went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, extending his hit streak to 12 games. Ryan Durant went 2-for-4 to continue his streak to 10.

Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the first. Kurtis Muller reached on a leadoff single, followed by a McQuillan and Durant base hit to load the bases. Freie took advantage and hit a no out sacrifice fly to pick up his 44th RBI.

The Hawkeyes kept at it in the fourth for a 2-0 score by way of a Freie leadoff solo homer.

Ohio State (38-15, 17-6) manufactured runs to tie it up 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Taking advantage of a Justin Miller RBI single and run scored. The Buckeyes added one in the fifth to take over the lead at 3-2. A two spot in the seventh added much needed insurance runs for Ohio State for a 5-2 ballgame.

Iowa (16-34, 4-18) added its final run in the eighth to lose, 5-4. McQuillan hit a single, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Phil Keppler RBI single up the middle.

Iowa takes on the Buckeyes again tomorrow in the final game of the series and season for the Hawkeyes. First pitch is set for noon (CDT).
