IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa starting pitcher Sasha Kuebel has been named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Baseball team, the Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced today.

Kuebel, who was a unanimous All-Big Ten freshman and second team all-conference honoree last month, finished his rookie campaign with an unblemished 6-0 record in 13 starts. The six victories ranked first on the team. The lefty carded a 2.67 ERA, which ranked seventh overall in the conference and first among league freshmen. Kuebel limited opposing hitters to a .241 batting average, which ranked ninth in the Big Ten. He ranked first on the team with two complete games.

"It's a great award for Sasha," said Iowa head coach Jack Dahm. "It's one that he definitely deserved. Being 6-0 as a freshman, and having so many big wins for us, is a credit to him and his competitiveness. He was in the starting rotation the entire season, and continued to get better and better as the season progressed. He has a very bright future within the program."

The St. Louis, Mo., native concluded his freshman season with a bang, shutting down conference champion and 13th-ranked Purdue during the last weekend of the season. He allowed one run while scattering eight singles and striking out four against the fifth-best hitting team in the country. The contest marked only the fourth time this season Purdue was held to one or fewer runs. For the season, Kuebel recorded 36 strikeouts in 87.2 innings, allowing only 15 walks. His effort earned him Big Ten Pitcher and co-Freshman of the Week accolades.
