IOWA CITY, Iowa - The UI Athletics Department is expecting attendance at tonight's season opener for Coach Fran McCaffery's UI men's basketball team to perhaps be the best-attended home opener for the Hawkeyes in almost a decade - a great thing with one exception: Parking challenges.
Some of the parking options regularly available for fans of the men's basketball program will not be available tonight because some of the locations will be open to fans of the UI football team who have arrived in Iowa City in advance of tomorrow's Iowa-Michigan State football game.
Please note the following concerning parking for both events:
All other parking lots around Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be available for basketball parking with the appropriate parking pass.
The Finkbine Commuter lot and all parking ramps will be open to the general public, as usual.
Specifically, the lots surrounding Carver-Hawkeye Arena, have the following restrictions.
Iowa fans should also be mindful of the fact that the free shuttle service from Hancher Auditorium will be in operation, beginning 90 minutes prior to the 7 p.m. tipoff.
The UI Athletics Department suggests fans of the Hawkeyes leave a little earlier than they would do normally for a men's basketball game to provide themselves some extra time to find parking. And, if they have any doubt about what their first choice should be, they should consider the shuttle service from Hancher, the Finkbine Commuter lot, or any of the ramps.
"We certainly are excited that our fans are excited about the start of the basketball season. We're confident that plenty of parking is available but some of the options require a short walk. Fortunately, Mother Nature is providing us a beautifully crisp late fall evening," said Rick Klatt, the UI's associate athletics director for external relations.
