THE STAFFWhat's better than having an experienced head coach? Having an experienced coaching staff. Along with UI head coach Fran McCaffery, the Hawkeyes have a coaching staff that has combined for over 40 years of head coaching experience.
McCaffery, who is in his 15th year as a head coach, has guided three different programs to the NCAA Tournament. Assistant coaches Kirk Speraw, Sherman Dillard and Andrew Francis have over six decades of combined coaching experience. Dillard was a head coach at Indiana State (1994-97) and James Madison (1997-2004), while Speraw, a two year Iowa letterwinner, served as the head coach at Central Florida for 17 seasons and at Pensecola Junior College. Francis, meanwhile, came with McCaffery from Siena, where he was an assistant coach for three seasons. The Hawkeye coaching staff also has ties to the National Basketball Association (NBA) in former Hawkeye and 11-year professional Ryan Bowen. Bowen, who played 10 seasons in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder, is Iowa's video coordinator and administrative assistant. Experience runs deep in the Iowa staff, as Director of Basketball Operations Jerry Strom is in his 31st year with the program, while Athletic Trainer John Streif has served the Hawkeyes since 1972.
