The 2011 Insight Bowl marked Iowa's 26th bowl game. Iowa holds a 14-11-1 bowl record, including a 6-4 mark under Coach Kirk Ferentz. Iowa has been bowl eligible for 11 consecutive seasons.

The Insight Bowl marked the second meeting ever between Iowa and Oklahoma. The Sooners won the only previous meeting, 21-6, in 1979 at Norman, Okla.

The attendance of 54,247 is an Insight Bowl record. The 2010 Insight Bowl, an Iowa win over Missouri, also set an attendance record of over 53,000.

The Insight Bowl was the last game for Norm Parker as Iowa's defensive coordinator, as he announced his retirement following the regular season. Parker has been Iowa's defensive coordinator for 13 seasons. Parker has coached in 497 games as a college coach, including 162 games with the Hawkeyes.

STARTING ON OFFENSE

Iowa won the toss and elected to receive. Iowa has started on offense in 135 of its last 156 contests, including 11-of-13 this season. The Hawkeyes have started the game on offense in 139-of-162 games under Coach Kirk Ferentz. Iowa games vs. Michigan (11/5/11), Iowa State (9/10/11), Minnesota (11/27/10), Wisconsin (10/23/10), Ohio State (11/14/07), Indiana (10/31/09), Purdue (11/15/08), Penn State (11/08/08), Wisconsin (10/10/08), Minnesota (11/10/07), at Northwestern (11/3/07), vs. Michigan State (10/27/07), at Penn State (10/6/07), vs. Iowa State (9/16/06), vs. Minnesota (11/19/05), vs. Michigan (10/22/05), at Purdue (10/8/05), at Minnesota (11/13/04), vs. Purdue (11/6/04), at Miami, OH (9/7/02) and at Michigan State (9/27/03) are the only contests that the Hawkeyes didn't start on offense. Iowa won 14 of the 21 games.

OPENING DRIVE

Iowa did not score on its opening possession for the seventh time this season. Iowa scored a touchdown on its opening drive vs. Purdue, Iowa State, ULM, Indiana and Michigan and a field goal vs. Northwestern.

Oklahoma did not score on its first possession. Iowa allowed six opponents to score on their opening drive in 2011, including three field goals and three touchdowns. Iowa has allowed 14 opponents to score on their opening drive in its last 52 games.

IN THE RED ZONE

Iowa was 2-3 inside the red zone, failing to gain a first down on a fourth-and-one, scoring on a TD pass and a TD rush.

The Hawkeyes have scored on 146 of the last 163 red zone possessions (97 TDs and 45 FGs), dating back to the Michigan State game in 2008. Iowa has scored on 127-144 (.881) combined inside the red zone in its last 41 games.

Oklahoma was 3-4 inside the red zone, scoring three touchdowns, while having a pass intercepted.

POINTS OFF TURNOVERS

Iowa intercepted a pass in the third quarter, but did not score following the theft. Iowa scored 47 points following 18 opponent turnovers (nine fumbles and nine interceptions) during the regular season.

The Hawkeye defense has collected at least one takeaway in 64 of its last 74 games, dating back to 2006.

Oklahoma collected two takeaways (both interceptions) and the Sooners scored a touchdown after a first quarter pick.

During the regular season, Iowa opponents scored 38 points following 16 Iowa turnovers.

McNUTT STAT UPDATES

Senior WR Marvin McNutt tied Kevin Kasper's school record for single season receptions. He finished the Insight Bowl with four catches for 46 yards, bringing his single season total to 82. Kasper set the record in 2000.

For the season, McNutt, Jr. had 82 receptions for 1,315 yards (16.0 avg.) and 12 scores. The 1,315 yards is an Iowa single-season record. The 1,315 yards receiving is seventh best by a Big Ten receiver in a single-season. McNutt has scored 168 career points, which ranks 10th at Iowa. McNutt, Jr. has 28 career touchdown receptions. He had eight scoring receptions in both 2009 and 2010.

McNutt had a reception in his 32nd straight game. McNutt has posted over 100 receiving yards in eight games this year.

He finished his career with 170 career receptions for 2,861 yards. McNutt, Jr. ranks second in career receptions and first in career yards.

CANZERI LEADS RUSHING

True freshman RB Jordan Canzeri led Iowa's ground game with 22 rushes for 58 yards and a touchdown. He also led the team with six receptions (28 yards). Canzeri's previous bests were five rushing attempts for 30 yards in Iowa's win over Louisiana-Monroe. The receiving totals were his first of the season.

VANDENBERG STAT UPDATES

Junior QB James Vandenberg completed 23-44 passes for 216 yards with two TD passes. His interception in the fourth quarter was just the sixth of the season. He has 25 touchdown passes.

Vandenberg completed 237-404 passes for 3,022 yards and 25 touchdowns on the season. Vandenberg moves up the single-season passing chart today to fourth. His career numbers are 3,537 yards on 284-499 passing. The 3,537 career passing yards rank ninth.

Vandenberg finished with 25 touchdown passes this season, with 13 of the 25 covering 20 yards or more.

He had four touchdown passes against Indiana and three in wins over Pittsburgh and Louisiana-Monroe.

BINNS GETS THEFT Senior DE Broderick Binns had the second pass interception of his career in the third quarter to stop an Oklahoma threat in the red zone. Binns had an interception and 20 yard return for a touchdown in a loss at Arizona in 2010.

QUICK HITS

  • DT Mike Daniels had two sacks in the first half. Oklahoma allowed just nine sacks during the regular season.
  • Sophomore OL Brett Van Sloten replaced Markus Zusevics late in the first half at right tackle and played his most extensive minutes of the season.
  • Sophomore TE C.J. Fiedorowicz had a career-high four receptions, including his third touchdown of the season.
  • Iowa's first scoring drive of the game lasted 7:50. It is Iowa's longest scoring drive of the year, in regards to time.
  • LB Anthony Hitchens replaced James Morris in the second half and recorded three tackles.
  • Oklahoma's initial first down of the game came in the second period after the Iowa defense allowed the Sooners just seven net yards in the first period.
  • Iowa held Oklahoma to 292 yards total offense, the lowest production of the season for the Sooner offense (310 yards at Florida State).
  • Senior punter Eric Guthrie had a solid night punting, averaging 44.3 yards on six punts, with a long of 55 yards.
  • INSTANT REPLAY

    Instant replay was used in the third quarter and again in the fourth. On both plays, an Iowa pass completion was reviewed, and the call on the field was upheld, the second for a touchdown.

    In the fourth period, an Iowa pass was nearly intercepted, but the call on the field, as incomplete, was upheld.
