IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa defensive back Shaun Prater was selected by Cincinnati in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft Saturday. Prater is the fourth Iowa player selected, as OL Riley Reiff was selected in the first round by Buffalo Thursday. Prater is the 49th Hawkeye player under Kirk Ferentz to be drafted and the 10th defensive back.

Along with Reiff in the first round, DL Mike Daniels was a fourth round selection of the Green Bay Packers and OL Adam Gettis was a fifth round selection of the Washington Redskins.

Prater (5-11, 185) is a native of Omaha, Neb., where he attended Central HS before joining the Hawkeye program. He earned first team all-Big Ten honors as a junior and senior, starting the final 25 games of his career and 35 games overall.

As a senior Prater recorded 33 solo tackles and 18 assists. He had one interception, returning the theft 89-yards for a touchdown in a non-conference win over Tennessee Tech. Prater had seven career interceptions for 173 yards, 19 career pass break-ups and four forced fumbles.

During his career Prater helped the Hawkeyes appear in four consecutive bowl games, as Iowa claimed wins in the 2009 Outback Bowl (South Carolina), 2010 Orange Bowl (Georgia Tech) and 2010 Insight Bowl (Missouri) before being defeated in the 2011 Insight Bowl (Oklahoma). Iowa posted a 35-17 record over the past five seasons.
