IOWA CITY, IA - Richard Evans, a University of Iowa letterman and one of the last remaining members of the famed "Ironmen" of 1939, has died at the age of 93. Evans passed away on May 26th at his home in Sarasota, FL.

Evans, an end, was an Iowa football letterman three times (1937-39) and a basketball letterman in 1940. He played in the startup NBA league for the Chicago Bruins, but went back to his passion, football, and played with Green Bay and the Chicago Cardinals. He had a long coaching career in the NFL as an assistant with the Packers, Cardinals, Redskins, Eagles, Browns, Lions and Patriots. He spent one year as an assistant at Notre Dame.

He is survived by his wife (Miriam) of 65 years, two sons and a daughter.

Just two members of the famed "Ironmen" of 1939 are still alive. Center George "Red" Frye and fullback Henry Vollenweider.
