IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Depth and skill is abundant at both the University of Iowa offensive backfield and receiver positions.
"Everybody has a lot of talent," UI senior running back Damon Bullock said Thursday after the Hawkeyes completed their 13th practice of fall camp. "Everybody has different abilities: Mark (Weisman) is a power back, (Jordan) Canzeri is more speed, I'm a little bit of both and I catch as well. LeShun (Daniels) is a big guy who can move."
Those four combined for 2,065 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. They also caught 29 passes.
"JP and Akrum are two quick backs," Bullock said. "If we get them the ball, they can make somebody miss."
Bobby Kennedy, entering his second season as wide receivers coach at the UI, has a similar luxury within his position group. He mentioned sophomore Matt VandeBerg (eight catches for 59 yards in 2013), and senior Kevonte Martin-Manley (40-388-5) in the slot. Junior Tevaun Smith (24-310-1) and freshman Derrick Willies at the X position. At the other outside position there is junior Jacob Hillyer (11-135-2) and sophomore Riley McCarron (3-11).
"I'm pleased where we are right now, but by no means are we a finished product," Kennedy said. "We still have to keep working. There is depth and that provides great competition throughout the day."
The Hawkeyes return to the practice field later this evening for their 14th practice of fall camp.
