IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Broderick Binns will be on the sidelines Saturday for his first game as a University of Iowa football graduate assistant against Northern Iowa.

Binns, a former defensive lineman (2008-11), will be assisting the coaching staff this season with special teams and the defensive line. An all-Big Ten performer as a senior, Binns said he wants to do whatever he can to help the Hawkeyes win games this season.

"While I'm here, I'm trying to impart my knowledge and help the team as best I can," Binns said.

With four weeks of practice coming to a close, Binns said the guys are ready for game competition.

"I think every college athlete around the country is tired of hitting the same guys," said Binns. "For us here, the most important thing is to get ready and have the mindset that it's going to be a tough game. There are no easy games on our schedule."

Binns has seen improvement in the guys since the start of practice in early August.

"The guys have grown. They've improved with each practice; it's been great to see," Binns said.

One of Binns' former teammates, Dace Richardson, will be back this weekend as the honorary captain. The duo were teammates on teams that won the 2009 Outback Bowl and 2010 Orange Bowl. Binns is excited to see one of his friends back in Iowa City.

"I'm so excited to see what Dace has to say to the team," said Binns. "He was my roommate; we're still really good friends today. It's great that coach Ferentz called him back to be honorary captain. I'm proud and happy for him."

Eric Collins and former Iowa quarterback Chuck Long will call the action Saturday on BTN. Kickoff is set for 11:01 a.m. (CT) in Kinnick Stadium. Tickets are available at the UI Ticket Office or online at hawkeyesports.com.
