IOWA CITY, IA - Three-time letterman and all-Big Ten running back Fred Russell has been named honorary captain for Saturday's game against Purdue. The Hawkeyes face the Boilermakers in a televised game with kickoff set for 11:03 a.m. in Kinnick Stadium. Tickets still remain for the contest. Iowa has sold out 36 straight home games.

Russell, a running back from Inkster, MI, lettered in 2001-03. He helped lead the Hawkeyes to a co-Big Ten championship in 2002 and was part of squads that played in the Alamo, Orange and Outback Bowls. He was named MVP of the Hula Bowl following the 2003 season.

Russell ranks fifth on Iowa's all-time rushing list with 2,760 career yards. He averaged 5.4 yards a carry during his career and scored 17 rushing. His 102 career points rank 24th in Iowa history. His top rushing game as a Hawkeye came against Minnesota, in 2002, when he ran for 194 yards.

Russell will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin-flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes on the sidelines and in the locker room before and after the game.
