Hawkeyes Top Purdue; Advance to Semifinals

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The third-seeded University of Iowa men's golf team opened the spring season with a bang, defeating Purdue in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Big Ten Match Play Championships. The Hawkeyes beat the Boilermakers, 4-1, to advance to the semifinals at The Concession Golf Club.
"It was a close match, and that was how we expected it," said head coach Mark Hankins. "Purdue played well today and kept with us. We were able to finish off four matches in the last two holes with solid play down the stretch."
Iowa received a bye in the first round while Purdue beat Nebraska to meet the Hawkeyes in the quarterfinals. The Hawkeyes, competing for the first time this spring, won four matches to advance to the semifinals. Iowa will meet Michigan State in the semifinals tomorrow.
Freshman Nate Yankovich put the Hawkeyes ahead early, winning his No. 5 match. Yankovich defeated Purdue's Ben-Marven Egel, 3&1.
Sophomores Ian Vandersee and Brian Bullington battled to narrow victories to help Iowa seal the victory. Vandersee went two-up on David Cooke in the No. 3 match, while Bullington defeated Jakob Ziegler, 2&1.
Junior Steven Ihm would shut the door on the contest in yet another narrow match, topping Adam Schenk in the No. 1 match. Ihm won, 2&1.
Iowa and Michigan State's semifinal match-up will begin with tee times at 6:40 a.m. (CT). Top-seeded Illinois and Ohio State will meet up in the other semifinal contest.
