April 19, 2009
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - The University of Iowa men's golf team finished the final round of the Boilermaker Invitational Sunday in third place with a 54-hole score of 864 (E). Illinois won the 18-team invite after shooting 855 (-9). Competition was played on the Kampen Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, IN. Sophomore Vince India led the Hawkeyes all three rounds, and finished in fourth after recording a 211 (-5). Sophomore Brad Hopfinger shot a 215 (-1) to finish tied for seventh, while senior Cole Peevler finished tied for 16th with a 218 (+2). Freshman Chris Brant carded a 220 (+4) to finish tied for 27th, and freshman Brad George finished the invite in a tie for 62nd with a score of 228 (+12). "We started well today, but didn't let anything happen. We just hung in there," said Head Coach Mark Hankins. "However, we're happy about our finish and we're a little bit closer to winning a golf tournament." Additionally, India talked about his ace on a 190-yard par three that topped off a stellar second round. "I was just looking to place it close to the pin with a 6-iron," said India. "It took one bounce and landed straight in the hole. I couldn't believe it." India went on to birdie two of the three next holes, and was excited to see a consistent trend with his teammates. "We finally had four scores going in the same direction this weekend," added India. "Hopefully, we will be able to look back and build on this going into the Big Ten Championships." The Hawkeyes will compete next at the 2009 Big Ten Championships May 1-3 in State College, PA.
