AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Iowa senior Dustin Rhoads competed in his first of two events Friday afternoon at the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. Rhoads, swimming the 100-yard backstroke, placed 34th in the event inside the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

"It was a great effort by Dustin today in the fastest 100 backstroke field in NCAA history," said UI head coach Marc Long. "We're excited for another opportunity in the 200 backstroke tomorrow."

Rhoads entered the NCAA Championships with the 29th-fastest time in the field in the event, having touched out in 46.53 at the Big Ten Championships. The time, which is a school record, placed Rhoads into the field of 51 eligible competitors. The Ames, Iowa, native would finish the prelims in 47.06 to place 34th.

Rhoads swims his second and final event of the NCAA Championships on Saturday, this time swimming the 200-yard backstroke. Rhoads holds the 34th-fastest time in the field in the event (1:42.94). The preliminary session is set to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
