ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Iowa swimming and diving team swam to a World Record in the 200 short course meters mixed-medley relay at the Michigan Water Carnival on Saturday at UM's Canham Natatorium.
In the second-to-last event of the day, the Hawkeyes swam to a World Record time when seniors Dustin Rhoads and Andrew Marciniak, junior Haley Gordon and sophomore Olivia Kabacinski finished with a time of 1:47.61.
The previous World Record was set this week in Bloomington, Ind., by the Indiana men's and women's teams at the Indiana Relay Rally. All World Records are unofficial until ratified by FINA.
Iowa also bested a previous World Record time in the mixed 200-meter freestyle relay when sophomore Jackson Allen, senior Gianni Sesto, freshman Emma Sougstad and sophomore Allie Orvis posted a time of 1:40.26. Michigan took down the old record, finishing in 1:36.78.
"This was a fun, competitive, and wild day of swimming," said UI head coach Marc Long. "It's extremely early in the season, but we raced hard over the weekend. It's now back to Iowa City to continue our preparation for more duals and the championship season.
"We want to thank Michigan for being a great host. They haven't skipped a beat from last season's NCAA Championship run."
The Hawkeyes also came away with victories in the 50-yard backstroke with a start from the blocks, 50-yard butterfly with flip turn and in the 400-yard toss-up and 500-freestyle relays.
Rhoads posted the top time in the 50-yard back, finishing with a time of 22.04 seconds. Junior Grant Betulius was the runner-up in 22.90 seconds. Sophomore David Ernstsson was the individual winner in the 50-butterfly with a flip turn, touching the wall in 22.32 seconds.
In the toss-up relay, sophomore Roman Trussov, freshman Nick Zito, Sesto and sophomore Quillan Oak posted a time of 3:31.94, while sophomore Olivia Kabacinski, freshman Serena Wanasek, senior Lindsay Seeman and junior Elise Borja won the 500-free relay in 4:38.08.
The UI women also tallied a runner-up showing in the 400-yard toss-up relay when Sougstad, Orvis, Kabacinski and Hannah Maher finished with a time of 4:03.25.
The Hawkeyes finished second in the 300-yard medley relay when the quartet of Maddie Bro, Karolina Wartalowicz, Haley Gordon and Kabacinski posted a time of 2:48.07. The men's quartet of Rhoads, Marciniak, Allen and Sesto also finished second in 2:24.20.
Wartalowicz also was the runner-up in the 100-yard breast stroke with two pullouts, posting a time of 1:05.59, while Trussov and Marciniak were third and fourth in the men's event in 57.37 and 57.63 seconds, respectively.
Gordon and Tuchscherer were second and third in the 50-yard butterfly with a flip turn, finishing with times of 25.41 and 26.17 seconds, respectively. Tuchscherer was also the runner-up in the 50-yard breast stroke with a flip turn, finishing in 29.83 seconds.
The Iowa women's team had the second and third place finishers in the 250-yard medley relay. Sophomore Ashley Horodyski, Gordon, Wartalowicz and Sougstad were runners-up in 2:20.93, while Lauren Drennan, Elaine Boosalis, Pamela Breitrick and Orvis were third in 2:25.50.
The Hawkeye men also tallied a runner-up showing in the 250-yard medley relay and the 500-freestyle relay. In the 250-medley relay, Allen, Rhoads, senior Tyler Lentz and Trussov posted a time of 2:03.07, while freshman Peter Grumhaus, Nick Zito, Sesto and Trussov finished in 4:06.83 in the 500-free relay.
Iowa returns to action Oct. 11, hosting the annual Intrasquad Meet at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool beginning at 7 p.m. (CT).
