Sept. 23, 2012
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa men's tennis team finished up its first two tournaments of the fall season on Sunday at the Drake Fall Invitational and Purdue Fall Invitational, respectively.
Play at Purdue was highlighted by freshman Dominic Patrick who went 1-1 today and was the Flight A Singles consolation runner-up. Patrick started his day with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Andrew Cahn of Western Michigan, which placed Patrick in the consolation championship match. Patrick fell in defeat to Erik Finkenbrink of Green Bay in the championship match 6-0, 3-6, 10-6.
"I was very pleased with Dominic in his first tournament," head coach Steve Houghton said. "To win three matches your first time out is impressive."
The other Hawkeye to see action at Purdue was Andres Estenssoro, who fell to Joey Leto of Green Bay 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Joey White led the way at Drake, with a third-place finish in Flight B. White defeated Ryan Norman of Creighton 6-2, 6-1 to secure his third place finish.
"White played some great tennis this weekend," Houghton said. "Winning two out of three in both your singles and doubles matches is a great accomplishment."
Overall, Coach Houghton was pleased with the Hawkeyes performance at Purdue and Drake. "I'm very pleased with the way things went this weekend. We had some athletes playing up in their flights so all things considered it was a good start to the season."
The Hawkeyes see action next on Sept. 28 at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia.
