Pair of Hawkeye Juniors Highlight First Round Action at Penn Invite

Philadelphia, Pa. -- The University of Iowa men's tennis team continued its fall season Friday with opening round action at the Penn Invitational. Juniors Chase Tomlins and Joey White highlighted action with each student-athlete going 3-0.
White competed in the Hamlin Flight in singles action defeating Ahkil Mehta of Buffalo 7-6, 6-2. Tomlins competed in the Ben Franklin Flight and beat Jason Derene of Delaware 6-3, 6-4. Tomlins and White continued their stellar play in Flight B doubles going with their two matches. The duo rattled off a pair of 8-1 victories in the first two rounds of the tournament defeating Austin and Swift of Norfolk, and Chernykh and Krentz of Lehigh, respectively. Tomlins and White are now 4-1 on the season when paired together in doubles.
Freshman Dominic Patrick continued his strong start to the season by defeating Austin Kaplan of Penn 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-4 in his singles match. Patrick's doubles partner Andres Estenssoro also won his only singles match of the day, defeating Nolan Gelman of Delaware 6-3, 6-3. Patrick and Estenssoro lost in doubles play by Hirschberg and Kravtchenko of Brown, after a first round bye.
Competition will continue Saturday with a 9 a.m. (CT) start.
