  • Northwestern Invite - Tournament Central

    EVANSTON, IL - - The University of Iowa men's tennis team opened fall competition Friday at the Wildcat Invitational. Teams competing along with the Hawkeyes include Northwestern, Toledo, Marquette, Ball State, Purdue, Wisconsin, DePaul, Drake and Western Michigan. The tournament format includes four flights of singles and two flights of doubles in double elimination format.

    "All of our guys were playing their first matches of the season," said Head Coach Steve Houghton. "Some were playing the first matches of their career. All things considered, I thought we played okay. I look for better days of competition tomorrow and Sunday."

    In Flight C of singles competition, two Hawkeyes saw their first collegiate action. Mitch Beckert defeated Michael Calderone of Western Michigan. The freshman was victorious 6-3, 7-6. Freshman Garret Dunn lost to Drake Kakar of Marquette 6-4, 6-1.

    In Flight B singles, Patrick Dwyer defeated Schanerman of Northwestern. The senior was victorious 6-1, 6-1.

    Iowa claimed one doubles victory Friday. Tom Mroziewicz and Beckert defeated Harika of Toledo and Dulin of Drake, 8-2.

    The Hawkeyes continue play at the Wildcat Invitational tomorrow. Singles competition is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. central time and doubles competition is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. central time. In addition, four Hawkeyes will begin competition at the ITA All-American Tournament tomorrow in Tulsa, OK.
