WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Iowa men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of play at the Big Ten Singles/Doubles Tournament on the campus of Purdue University. One round of singles play was finished with four Hawkeyes moving on to the round of 32.

Jonas Dierckx, Matt Hagan, Dominic Patrick, and Nils Hallestrand all recorded wins in the first round of the final tournament of the fall season. Dierckx, a No. 5 seed in the tournament cruised to an easy first match victory, dropping Kevin Wong of Michigan, 6-1, 6-1. Up next for Dierckx is Wisconsin's Jakhongier Jalalov.

Hagan, a No. 9 seed lost the first set 1-6, before taking the next two sets 6-2, 6-2. He moves on to face Marc Roy of Michigan State in the round of 32.

Patrick continued his hot play of late, winning a three-set match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 over Daniel Bednzrxzyk of Indiana. In the second round, Patrick draws Brett Forman of Michigan State.

Rounding out the victories, Hallestrand won a straight-sets match over Nebraska's Andrew Dzuinsky, 7-5, 6-4. Shaun Bernstein, the No. 4 seed from Michigan, is Hallestrand's second-round opponent.

In doubles play, the Hawkeyes struggled, dropping all five of their main draw matches.

In consolation play, the teams of Alden/White, Hallestrand/Swank, Dierckx/Hagan and A. Estenssoro/Patrick recorded victories. The quarterfinals featured a matchup of two Hawkeye teams, as Alden and White took on Estenssoro and Patrick. Alden and White emerged victorious, 8-3.

In other consolation quarterfinal play, Dierckx and Hagan advanced to the semis as well with an 8-5 win over Acosta/Dujovne of Purdue. The two remaining doubles teams will finish their remaining matches Saturday morning before singles play resumes.
