This Week
The University of Iowa men's tennis team will travel to Madison, WI, to compete at the Big Ten Singles tournament on Friday through Monday. Competition will be held at the Nielson Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.

The Competition
The field consists of all 11 Big Ten schools, including a bracket-style format, which will consist of just singles competition. The field features nine teams ranked in the top 75 nationally: Illinois (2nd), Ohio State (12th), Minnesota (38th), Northwestern (41st), Michigan State (53rd), Michigan (55th), Purdue (60th), Indiana (61st) and Penn State (64th). Fourteen inviduals from the 11 teams are ranked in the top 125, led by Indiana's Jakub Praibis, who is ranked 23rd.

Hawkeyes In the Tournament
The Hawkeyes will be sending eight competitors to the competition. Three Hawkeyes will be competiting in the qualifying rounds on Friday: Jonny Hoak, Aaron Schaechterle and Andrew Holm. Five Others will start competition on Saturday in the main draw which includes: Chaitu Malempati, Kyle Markham, J.P. Ritchie, Bart van Monsjou and Brett Taylor.

At ITA Regionals
The University of Iowa men's tennis squad competed at the ITA Regionals, where the Hawkeyes had a strong showing in doubles competition. The duos of Chaitu Malempati and Bart van Monsjou and Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor both had winning records over the course of the tournament. Taylor and Markham advanced all the way to the quarterfinals in the 64-seed bracket, where they were defeated by eventual champs Ryler DeHeart and GD Jones of Illinois. DeHeart and Jones were seeded No. 1 and are currently ranked 17th nationally. Taylor and Markham finished the tournament going 3-1.

Head Coach Steve Houghton
Coach Houghton is the dean of Big Ten tennis coaches, is in his 24th season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Houghton has a career record of 261-260 (.501). He became the winningest coach in Iowa tennis history in 1992 and is a member of the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame. He has coached 15 players to 29 all-Big Ten selections including Tyler Cleveland, who became the first men's player in Big Ten history to be named Big Ten Player of the Year twice. Four of Houghton's athletes have also been selected Big Ten Sportsman of the Year.
