IOWA CITY, IA -- The University of Iowa wrestling team treated their fans to some great matches during Saturday morning's wrestle-off finals at the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex. Returning all-Americans and seniors Daniel Dennis (133), Brent Metcalf (149), Ryan Morningstar (165), Jay Borschel (174) and Phillip Keddy (184) won their bouts, while senior Chad Beatty also posted a win at 197. Sophomores Montell Marion (141) and Jordan Johnson (Hwt.), redshirt freshman Matt McDonough (125) true freshman Derek St. John (157) also recorded wins at their weight classes. "We saw some good potential and depth in a lot of places," said University of Iowa Head Wrestling Coach Tom Brands. "This was a chance for our guys to weigh-in, have a competition and shake some of the cobwebs out. The results mean a lot and mean nothing at this point. We have a lot of depth and competition in our room, which is no secret, but in order for us to win championships we need guys to wrestle well at every competition." The defending NCAA and Big Ten champion Hawkeyes will open the season Nov. 14 at the Harold Nichols Open in Ames. Iowa's first home dual will be Nov. 20 when it hosts the six-team Iowa City Duals in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
