Hawkeyes Compete At World Team Trials

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA -- Seven current, or former, Hawkeyes competed in men's freestyle wrestling at the 2009 World Team Trials last weekend in Council Bluffs, IA. The 2009 World Team will represent the United States at the 2009 World Wrestling Championships in Herning, Denmark, Sept. 21-27. Iowa Volunteer Assistant Coach Mike Zadick (60 kg), Hawkeye Strength and Conditioning Coach Jared Frayer (66 kg) and former Hawkeye Steve Mocco (120 kg) all wrestled in the championship matches, but lost their bouts and did not earn spots on the 2009 World Team. Frayer won the 66 kilogram challenge tournament - which also featured Hawkeye Assistant Coach Doug Schwab and senior-to-be Brent Metcalf. By winning the challenge tournament, Frayer earned the right to face 2009 U.S. National champion Trent Paulson for the World Team spot. He lost the first two matches in the best-of-three competition (3-0, 0-3, 2-2; 2-0, 1-0). Zadick and Mocco each won U.S. National titles in April, and did not have to compete in the challenge tournament. Zadick lost two matches to Shawn Bunch (0-3, 3-1, 2-1; 3-0, 0-2, 1-0) and Mocco went 2-1 against Tervel Dlagnev (Sunkist Kids WC) (1-0, 0-1, 0-2; 0-3, 3-0, 2-2; 1-3, 1-1) in the championship bouts. Schwab, Metcalf, senior-to-be Daniel Dennis (60 kg) and former Hawkeye Eric Luedke (84 kg) each wrestled in the challenge tournaments. Luedke lost his first bout, but won the next four to place third.
